ROSE HALL, St James — Americans Ben Greenfield and Michelle Harburg won the men's and women's international distance sections of the Jamaica Triathlon held in Rose Hall on Sunday, starting and finishing at the Iberostar hotel.
Greenfield, who was third last year and who won the International Triathlon Union's (ITU) Long Course World Championships in Nevada last week, topped the small men's field, finishing in two hours, 16 minutes and 46 seconds, beating South African-born Cayman Islands resident Johan Heath (2:25.38 hours) and Jamaica's Patrick Lee (2:33.31 hours).

Harburg finished in 2:42.05 hours, beating Susan Grant (2:43.20 hours) and Jessica Greenfield, Ben's wife (3:10.03 hours).
The international distance was competed over the Olympic distance of a 1,500m open water swim, a 40k bike ride and 10k run.
The top two finishers in the event praised the newly-redesigned course, saying while it was "challenging" it was much easier to navigate.
Greenfield told the Observer that after his exertions last week he knew his run would not be the strongest, so he had to push as hard as he could on the first two sections to create a gap between his and the others.
Heath, who was also involved in the Cayman Islands Triathlon last week where he was second, told the Observer his biggest challenge came on the run where he said he "struggled".
Rayne Russell, the organiser of the event, was happy with the outcome. "We exceeded our expectations," he told the Observer.
On a scale of one to 10, he said he gave his team a perfect score for "a job well executed".
"This is about the athletes," he said, "and the experience has been a great one and the host hotel, Iberostar could not have been a better host".
Russell reported that the Wata-sponsored workshops for students held Saturday was "oversubscribed, as over 700 students turned up", but said this was good for the sport as it increased the local awareness of the event.
Meanwhile, Jamaica's Bobby Barnes and American Michelle Fix took the male and female Sprint Races, which was half the International distance.
Barnes clocked 1 hour, 34 minutes and 43 seconds to finish ahead of Jamaican Christian Sale (1:41.44 hours) and American Nathan Hahn (1:41.50 hours).
Fox covered the course in 2:09.53 hours, beating Jamaicans Terry-Ann Miller (2:13.47 hours) and Nicole Thompson (2:30.39 hours).
Cyclists Howard Ward and Dahlia Palmer were the overall winners in 10 Duathlon races — ride and run.
Ward, the National Masters Time Trial champion, was first in 1:43.00 hours, while Palmer of Lucea, Hanover, the double national champion and Caribbean Cycling championships road race silver medallist, won in 1:47.10 hours after missing a turn during the cycling.

ROSE HALL, St James - FOR the second year, student/athletes from western Jamaica will benefit from a workshop held in collaboration with the Jamaica Triathlon that will be staged at the Iberostar hotel this weekend, November 11-13th.
The students from the high schools in the region will be taught the fundamentals of the three sporting disciplines that make up the triathlon — swimming, cycling and running — by experts in each sport in the one-day event sponsored by Ocean Spray Wata and staged at Iberostar on Saturday, November 12 starting at 9:30am.
At the launch, Tamara Ward of Wisynco, said a number of experts including Christian Tavares-Finson of the Jamaica Cycling Federation, athlete Juliet Cuthbert and former national swimming coach Jackie Walters will be among the presenters at the workshops.
The triathlon, which will have its fourth staging and has had a name change from the Rose Hall Triathlon and was launched two Wednesdays ago at Iberostar.
Rayne Russell, the organiser of the event said at the launch they were expecting a large turnout of overseas athletes for the event that would be run over the Olympic distance of a 1500m swim, 40m bike ride and 10k run.
Already he said they had received entries from 100 overseas entries, twice the amount that took part last year.
The workshop will see the students taking part in several sessions and they must take part in at least one of the three workshops that will include swimming, cycling and a 5K walk/run.
They will also be eligible for the Sprint Triathlon and duathlon events that will be held on Sunday

With more than $4 million to stage the newly branded Jamaica Triathlon at Iberostar Resort in Montego Bay, the organisers are making the event more destination-friendly to accommodate all levels of sports enthusiasts.
"In keeping with our internationally recognised name and rich heritage in sports, the Jamaica Triathlon was renamed from Rose Hall Triathlon to make it easier to market the brand internationally," the events director Rayne Russell outlined at the press launch of the event at its host location.
The premier sporting event is listed as one of the 100 best Triathlon in the world. The fourth staging of Jamaica Triathlon will be hosted at a central location on the grounds of Iberostar Resort from November 11 to 13.
Destination-friendly event
"This year, we have focused on making the event more destination-friendly and not geared towards only professionals or amateurs. This year, everyone who wants to participate in the triathlon can do so. We will still have about 10 confirmed professional athletes at the event, but we have it opened up to a wider cross-section of participants," Russell explained.
He further added that the course is different from that of last year, as all the events will begin and end at Iberostar Hotel beach. This course is also easier, Russell said, and participants will be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery on the elegant Rose Hall corridor.
A new addition to the weekend of triathlon activities is the Corporate Jamaica 5K Run/Walk Challenge that is opened to all corporate companies across the island. The event is limited to 150 walkers and 150 runners, because the races will be timed using Pro-Chip Timing, a technology that allows for easier timing of all the participants.
Registration is open for all events, including the Corporate Jamaica 5K Run/Walk Challenge and can be done at www.jamaicatri.com.
In a bid to promote youth involvement in sports, Ocean Spray Wata, for the second year, has decided to sponsor their Ocean Spray WataSchool Challenge Workshop. The workshop will see some 500 children from ages 13-18 engaged in activities such as a one-on-one clinic on equipment, technique, nutrition, discipline and triathlons. At the end of the workshop, they will participate in a mandatory 5K run.
Jamaica's Annual Rose Hall Triathlon & Multi Sports Festival Celebrates Largest Registration Ever
Published Oct 27, 2010 The Jamaica Tourist Board-endorsed Rose Hall Triathlon and Multi Sports Festival celebrates its largest registration ever in three years of operation. On October 23 – 24, in the island’s tourist capital, sports enthusiasts, athletes and adventure travelers will gear up to swim, cycle and run on the 4,000 acres of the Rose Hall Resort, a Hilton Resort and Spa, an unmatched tropical paradise on the “gold coast” of Jamaica.
The competition will take place at the 18-hole Robert von Hagge, Cinnamon Hill Golf Course at Rose Hall Resort. The race is now rated by Triathlete Magazine as one of the top 100 best events of its kind in the world. It consists of a 1,500-meter swim beginning at Iberostar Grand Hotel Rose Hall and running along the resort’s beautiful white sand beach; two laps of a lightning-fast bike course including a sheer climb in the middle; and a two lap run on the spectacular Cinnamon Hill course, ending with the steepest final 200 meters of any triathlon, the grueling “Witch Hill,” perched on the grounds of the historic Rose Hall Great House.
“Jamaica has hosted many outstanding sports contests over the years,” said John Lynch, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism. “The island’s diverse terrain and lively culture have always attracted adventure travelers. We offer competitors challenging, yet fun and relaxing athletic events in a tropical setting, and the Rose Hall Resort grounds will certainly test the athletes’ skills.”
“The Rose Hall Triathlon has been host to well-known triathletes, including the European duo Nicolas Becker and Isabelle Ferrer, and Olympians like Australian Greg Bennett and his wife American Laura Bennett, who were once ranked in the top five racers in the world,” said Rayne Russel, managing director, Entertain Jamaica, and event director, Rose Hall Triathlon. “Our additional events, like the 5k, are also drawing a crowd, with over 500 participants in the short race this year.”

15th Annual Jake’s Off Road Triathlon Partners with Local Sponsors and Gyms to Launch the Treasure Beach Sport’s Festival and Raise Funds for Breds: The Treasure Beach Foundation.
Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth (February 11, 2010): Each year the Jake’s Off-Road Triathlon, known for its rugged race course and community-driven approach, brings athletes and spectators from overseas and around the island to Jamaica’s sleepy South Coast. The annual competition, usually staged on a Sunday, will now take place on Saturday, April 25th and will be combined with a weekend of fitness activities and entertainment hosted by some of Jamaica’s top gyms and sporting associations. As always, proceeds from the Triathlon go to BREDS: The Treasure Beach Foundation.
The main race begins bright and early on Saturday, April 25th, at 7am with a 500 Meter Ocean Swim in Great Bay, followed by a 25K Mountain Bike course and ending with a 7K Country Run. However, participants and spectators will arrive from Friday, April 23rd to participate in what has been dubbed the Treasure Beach Sports Festival – three days of races, yoga, cycling, celebration and relaxation. Athletes will be challenged both mentally and physically throughout the weekend while also being rewarded with an exciting prize giving and beach party.
Things kick off on the Friday evening with Sunset Resort’s 5K run and the ‘Gentle Triathlon
Yoga Stretch’ hosted by Shakti Mind.Body.Fitness. Following the Triathlon on Saturday, Kingston’s In Motion Dance & Fitness Studio will offer a ‘Post-Race Cool Down & Stretch,’ and at midday the 8 to 14 set get their time to shine in the ‘Likkle Jake’s Kidz Triathlon’. Saturday afternoon will also cater to the hardcore cyclists who want to compete in the ‘Big Ground’ Up & Down’ – a steep mile high hill climb and timed descent. The evening’s festivities begin at Sunset with the Jake’s Off-Road prize giving ceremony culminating in an exciting beach party. Activities continue on Sunday the 26th, with Afya’s ‘Morning After Yoga and Stretches’ followed by the ‘Treasure Beach Bike Bash’ hosted by the Jamaica Cycling Federation.
Each year athletes enjoy the competition, but also a weekend of great food, fun activities and warm people. It is also a get-away weekend for friends and family who want to cheer on the sidelines for the athletes. They are joined by excited community spectators who consider it their duty to help keep the race going and encourage the athletes.
The event’s lead organizer, Jim Curl, a professional Triathlon consultant who was just inaugurated into the US Triathlon Hall of Fame has worked with Jake’s Off Road for the past 10 years, “The exciting atmosphere alone is enough to thrill the competitors, but knowing that all of their dedication and hard work contributes to a charitable cause adds to their feeling of accomplishment and success. All proceeds from the event go directly to Breds, a non-profit organization that promotes Education, Sports, Cultural Heritage, and Environmental awareness in Treasure Beach. In the past proceeds helped to begin building the Treasure Beach Sports Park, which now houses a professional size football field. Development of the Sports Park is still underway and will eventually include a cricket pitch, tennis courts, basketball and netball courts, playground and community center.”
Wisynco is on board once again as a major sponsor. The triathlon encourages a healthy lifestyle, which provides an ideal association for its WATA and Nature Valley® brands. The rehydration benefit derived from WATA helps to maintain normal body temperature, which is important for the athletes’ health throughout the weekend. Nature Valley® granola bars, which are made with all natural ingredients, give energy and help to maintain endurance and stamina. For the first time, Pan Caribbean, a member of the Sagicor group, is on board as a sponsor. No stranger to health-driven charity events, Pan Caribbean is the organizer of the highly successful annual Sigma Corporate Run. They will be onsite with the Sagicor Health bus and ‘Cool Down’ tent to ensure that all participants are able to recuperate and maintain strong health.

"I'm really happy to win, this was a really really tough course," said the elated Becker. "It is one of the hardest I've had to compete on but the climate motivated me. It's a very relaxing atmosphere." In sealing the female title, which was won at last year's inaugural staging by the American Julie Swail-Estelle, Ferrer proved too much for German diplomat Alexandra Consten, who took second; and Jennifer Tetrick of the United States, who finished third. "The course was very hot, very challenging," said Ferrer, who was competing in Jamaica for the first time. "I will definitely come back. It's my first time in Jamaica and I love the people." Patrick Lee, who was the best of the local participants last year, took the local male title again with a 2:32:13 clocking. Alan Beckford took second and Christopher Gooden finished third. Rachelle Heinould of Kingston emerged the best of the local women, clocking 3:18:27 minutes to take the local title ahead of Michelle Gabay, also of Kingston.
Women's Sprints Title

Kingstonians Nigel Knowles and Stephen Royes were second and third, respectively. Tamiko Butler of Antigua defeated Jamaica's Lisa Lindo and Katy Downs for the women's sprints title. The 10k run consists of two laps on the Cinnamon Hill Golf Course, ending with a steep final 200 meters already known as the “Witch’s Hill”. The grueling ‘Witch Hill’, perched on lands at the historic Rose Hall Great House, remains haunted by the prowess of Olympians Greg and Laura Bennett, who both return to Jamaica this year for the 2009 Wata Rose Hall Triathlon and Wellness Festival.
Greg Bennett returns to defend his championship title, having won the event in 1:59:31 in 2008 while his wife Laura promises to move her notch up from 1st runner-up position to the number one spot.
On October 31, 2009, the power couple will compete against Triathletes from all across the globe in the international distance which comprises a 1500m ocean swim; 23k bike and 10k golf course run. The excitement commences with the swim at the Rose Hall Resort and Spa, A Hilton Resort, culminating with the run on the Robert Van Hagge designed 18-hole Cinnamon Hill Golf Course in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
“The event is challenging, but it is a true adventure,” stated the title holder, who added that it was the adventure that makes Triathlon a unique sport. “The Wata Rose Hall Triathlon is truly a special experience that will challenge every athlete with its dramatic climbs and the Witch’s Hill."
In the meantime, Laura Bennett, who placed fourth at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, has dared those up to taking a challenge to “Bring on the witch." The athlete noted, "I look forward to racing in Jamaica; it was and is a demanding course, exciting for the beginner triathlete and challenging for the professionals!”
Comparing Jamaica to a great end of season event the couple said the island was an easy trip from the States. “And the event is a great Triathlon challenge. We are both excited about having Rose Hall Jamaica on our schedule for the conclusion of the year.”
Complemented by a wellness festival, the marquee event has had added two new features to this year’s event. Rayne Russell, managing director of Entertain Jamaica, announced, “We want this event to be a family affair and so we have added a kid’s triathlon to the mix." The fun continues into the evening with a Halloween party at the 17th Century Rose Hall Great House made famous by the White Witch of Rose Hall, Annie Palmer.
“One thing we can promise is that Annie will ride out on her horse and carrying her whip, like she did back in the days,” said Russell as he gave a sneak preview into the ghost stories made famous by the witch.
Wellness Festival
The event will bring together leading fitness and wellness professionals from Jamaica and the United States, who will provide an open forum for discussion, exploration and learning.
“We will highlight the event through the unique holistic healing methods which have been practiced in Jamaica for generations, as well as a diverse realm of universally-recognized wellness traditions, most of which have made their way from the East to Jamaica’s shores,” said Russell.

Claiming early stakes for the October 26 event, Lee won the male international distance 1500 metre swim, 40k bike and 10k run, in 2:26.08, ahead of his closest rivals second and third place winners Tytgat Redgy (Belgium) and Nigel Knowles (England), who finished 2:50.43 and 2:50:57 respectively.
Alexandra Consten, who toured the island recently as a member of the all female BRADA cycling team, victoriously walked away with the women's international distance title, clocking a commendable 2:40.15, while young Oshane Hall, virtually, an unknown outpaced several other triathletes taking the male and female Sprint in 1:39.20.
